About Brighten Press

Founded in 2018 and based in Houston, Texas, Brighten Press is a small, independent publisher building humor, guidance, fiction, and poetry books for children and adults.

We expect our children's books to be magical, heartfelt, funny, and thrilling, with strong visual imagination, no matter the age range or format. Each title will be particularly designed with both experienced and reluctant readers in mind.

Our adult works will challenge, enlighten, and inspire, with an emphasis on providing engaging, immersive, and unforgettable storytelling, satisfying previously overlooked avenues of information presentation, or showcasing unique, humanist voices with something substantial and personal to relate.

We hope you'll join us in our literary endeavor as a reader, writer, or supporter of the creative arts.

Gene Hult, Publisher

Starting in 1987 at the age of 17, while getting his BA in English/Writing at NYU, Gene joined the literary world as an intern at Scott Meredith Literary Agency and the book packaging company Daniel Weiss Associates, Inc., where he was an editor on the Sweet Valley High series. Gene has grown up and lived his professional career in publishing, particularly children's publishing.

After getting an MA in English/Writing from the University of Denver, where he was the Managing Editor of the Denver Quarterly, he worked as an Editor at HarperCollins, a Senior Editor at Scholastic, and an Executive Editor at Simon and Schuster.

Often specializing in series fiction and licensed tie-in children's books and activity books, Gene is experienced with books for multiple markets, in every genre and format, and especially loves adult, young adult, and middle-grade adventure fiction, poetry, children's picture books and easy readers, and novelty books for all ages.
